What You Need to Know Before You Ride

Electric bikes are growing in popularity across Cyprus, and it’s easy to see why. They’re fun, efficient, eco-friendly, and make getting around easier than ever. But if you’re new to e-bikes, you might be wondering: How do they actually work? And what do I need to know before buying one?

This guide is here to help! Whether you’re looking to buy your first e-bike or just want to understand how they work, we’ll walk you through the basics, using real examples from our trusted brands Romet and Creon, available right here at RidE-Bike.

What Is an Electric Bike?

An electric bike (e-bike) is just like a regular bicycle but with extra help. It’s equipped with a motor, battery, and speed sensors that work together to assist you as you pedal.

The motor doesn’t do all the work for you, but it can do most of it, and makes riding feel much easier, especially on hills or over long distances.

How Does Pedal Assist Work?

In the European Union, including Cyprus, e-bikes must follow specific rules. One of the most important is that only pedal-assist systems are allowed. This means the motor only engages when you are pedaling, and cannot be operated with a throttle control like a motorcycle. This type of system is called “pedelec” (short for pedal electric cycle).

Another EU requirement is that their speed be restricted to 25 km/h. The motor gives you power only when you’re turning the pedals, and automatically limits its power once you reach 25 km/h. After that, you can still go faster, but on your own pedaling power.

Understanding the Battery

The battery is what supplies electrical power to the motor. Older models usually mounted them on the rear rack, but more commonly on the newer models we sell, they are neatly integrated into the frame and secured with an internal lock for security. They are simple to remove for charging, but can also be charged easily whilst still inside the bike. Here’s what beginners need to know:

➤ Charging: Plugs into a standard household socket and power supply, no need for any special equipment or infrastructure besides the charger.

➤ Charging Time: Most batteries take about 5–6 hours to fully charge from empty.

➤ Range: Depending on the model, you can ride 60–130 km on one charge, sometimes much more if you use lower assist levels and ride on flat ground.

With a Romet and Creon e-bikes, you’ll typically get a high-quality lithium-ion battery with a minimum 504Wh capacity, which is more than enough for daily commuting or weekend rides.

What About the Motor?

The motor is the heart of the e-bike’s system, creating the power and drive to assist the peddling. Both Romet and Creon bikes use mid drive motors in which the motor is mounted under the centre of the frame where the cranks and pedals connect. Additionally Romet also produces  cheaper entry level models equipped with rear hub motors in which the motor is contained within the rear wheel. Here’s how they help:

➤ Power: EU law limits the motor power to 250 watts, which is perfect for urban and recreational riding.

➤ Torque: This tells you how strong the motor feels, especially uphill. Both Romet and Creon motors have a minimum of 45Nm of torque, which makes hill climbs feel much easier.

➤ Quiet & Smooth: Most motors are very quiet, you’ll barely hear them running.

Who Are E-Bikes Good For?

Electric bikes are great for Commuters looking to avoid traffic jams and save money on fuel, Older cyclists or people who are physically limited by the strains of the hills and heat in Cyprus, and really anyone who wants to explore and enjoy Cyprus’ mountainous and coastal routes with ease. Riding an E-bike still gives you some exercise, and all the pleasures of a normal bike, it just takes the edge off when you need it.

What the Law Says in Cyprus & the EU

Before you hit the road, it’s important to understand the legal side:

Allowed:

➤ Pedal-assist motor (motor only works when you’re pedaling)

➤ Max speed with assist: 25 km/h

➤ Max motor power: 250W

➤ No license, registration, or insurance required

 Not allowed:

➤ Throttle-controlled e-bikes (where the motor runs without pedaling)

➤ E-bikes that exceed 25 km/h with motor power

➤ E-bikes with higher motor power without special approval

All Romet and Creon e-bikes sold through RidE-Bike are manufactured in Europe and meet the rigorous EU standards, so you can ride with peace of mind when it comes to quality and legality.

What to Expect as a New E-Bike Owner

First-time riders often notice the amount they ride increases after long distances, hills, and fatigue stop holding them back. They also continue to get the benefits of being more active as they’re still peddling, just without so much strain on the body. More money also stays in their pockets as E-bikes are significantly cheaper than running and maintaining cars or scooters. Above all else, new E-bike riders find great fun and happiness once the physical demands and limitations are removed with the help of the motor, allowing them to focus fully on the enjoyment of their rides and destinations.

Maintenance is also simple. Just keep the battery charged, the tires inflated, and get a service every 6-12 months, just like a regular bike.
